President Obama has allowed insurance companies to extend health plans not allowed under the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. the health care reform law, or ACA) through 2014, The New York Times reports. The change permits insurers to renew existing policies that do not provide upgrades required by the ACA. Sales of these old noncompliant policies are still not allowed for new customers. The change was prompted by pressure in Congress from both Democrats and Republicans. Both parties are continuing to seek legislation to ensure permanent changes to allow people to keep their current policies.
