Federal officials are proposing new options for the public to legally dispose of unwanted controlled substances, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is seeking changes to the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act, which was signed into law in 2010. The changes would allow law-enforcement agencies and pharmacies to maintain collection boxes for prescription drugs. The DEA also wants local police departments and sheriff’s offices to continue hosting “take-back” events for prescription drugs, which they have done since 2010. These changes would support efforts to keep highly abused prescription drugs off the streets.
